Claudio Conta is Professor of Introduction to Subnuclear Physics (first level degree in Physics) and Elementary Particle Physics (second level degree in Physics) at the Pavia University. He is collaborator of the INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare).
Professor C. Conta has been involved in many experimental efforts at CERN where he participated to the Gargamelle experiment (neutral current discovery) and to the UA2 experiment (W and Z bosons discovery); he is now involved in the ATLAS experiment for the research of the Higgs boson. Professor C. Conta has authored, in collaboration, numerous papers in leading scientific journals.

The textbook provides an introduction to modern particle physics. The most relevant developments in high energy physics are reviewed with a phenomenological approach, that allows for a balance between theory and experiment, in order to give a comprehensive description of the electromagnetic, weak and strong interactions between the elementary particles. Starting from the Quantum Electro-Dynamics (QED), the basic concepts of the unified electroweak theory are illustrated; then, by considering the Quantum Chromo-Dynamics (QCD), the Standard Model of quarks and leptons is finally achieved. No physics beyond the SM will be described in the text book.
