LEGS - Linguistics and Experimental Language Teaching (full description)

«LEGS - Linguistica e Glottodidattica Sperimentale»
Linguistics and Experimental Language Teaching: a series of monographs published online and Open Access

1. Main features of LEGS Series
LEGS is a series of peer-reviewed monographs devoted to theoretical and applied linguistics and to language acquisition studies relative to typical and atypical-development learners. The main feature of the series is that it publishes only peer-reviewed experimental research in an open access web-based platform. The series publishes either in English or Italian.
The studies taken into account for being published must have been conducted according to the procedures which abide by the highest standards in academic research. These standards are those followed by the most important international journals of theoretical and developmental linguistics (e.g. Linguistics, Language, Language Acquisition, Studies in Second Language Acquisition , International Review of Applied Linguistics and Language Teaching, Second Language Research, Applied Linguistics etc).
Submitted works must present both original data and statistical/quantitative treatment of the data, with measures of generalization across population (such as eta-square) whenever appropriate. Preference will be given to works which deal with behavioral (oral production tasks, reaction times, acceptability judgments) and physiological data (ERP, fMRI, eye-tracking etc.) elicited in strictly controlled conditions, since those studies can be replicable. Submission of replication studies is strongly encouraged as well.
As to second language acquisition and teaching (glottodidattica), only experimental research will be taken in consideration for publication. This research may include (but will not be limited to) studies about input modulation and enhancement, explicit vs. implicit learning and teaching, kind of feedback given by teachers, task-based teaching, learners' output, the teaching of pragmatics, etc. Reports on classroom experience and proposals concerning teaching-techniques and classroom pedagogy that are not based on falsifiable data will not be considered for publication.
Topics considered for publication may vary from neurolinguistics to pragmatics, sociolinguistics, class-based and corpus-based research, without limitations relative to theoretical frameworks, number and kind of languages under scrutiny and subjects that are investigated. The first edited volume (“La ricerca sperimentale sul linguaggio: acquisizione, uso, perdita”, Stefano Rastelli (Ed.)) functions as the position-book for the LEGS series.

2. Peculiarity of LEGS series
LEGS is the first and only series of monographs in Italy that publishes exclusively experimental, theoretical and developmental research. The open-access modality allows researchers to share cutting-edge methodology and to spread findings within the scientific community faster and at no expenses. The academic quality of publications is not undermined by the choice of the open-access modality. The scientific committee of the series is composed by internationally acknowledged specialists in the field. The blind, peer-review procedure guarantees that only highest-quality research is published, regardless of authors' affiliation, record and academic position.

3. Publication process
All titles of LEGS are peer-reviewed. Authors are invited to submit their works to the editorial committee (stefano.rastelli@unipv.it) for preliminary in-house evaluation. At this step the submission of the whole book is not necessary. Instead, the author(s) must send a .doc file including: (a) Working title of the book with name of the author(s) and contact details; (b) Purpose, aims and focus of the book (half page); (c) Chapter-by-chapter synopsis of the contents; (d) Predicted length in number of words (we will not accept a page estimate) and number of illustrations/tables/special typesetting requirements; (e) Predicted timetable for delivery of the final manuscript (if it is not ready yet), (f) One sample-chapter. If the outcome of in-house evaluation is positive, the authors will be asked to send the entire work. At this point, two members of the scientific panel of LEGS will be appointed for reviewing. The reviewers may suggest either acceptance or rejection of the manuscript or indicate slight modifications or considerable revisions which must be completed in any case before the manuscript can be accepted for publication. Once we have approved the final manuscript, the book can go into production. The title is then published online on the Pavia University Press website (http://www.paviauniversitypress.it/) in open access modality. Normally one or two titles per year will be published.
